Progressive, energetic and wise to the pressures of growth - just some of the things the Tauranga City Council wants in a chief executive.

Advertisements have appeared in print and on various job search websites for the city leadership role.

Former Wellington City Council chief executive Garry Poole has held the $356,000-a-year position since February 2013.

His five-year contract was due to end in April.

Last year elected members opted to advertise the role rather than reappoint Poole for another two years.

Mayor Greg Brownless said at the time the decision did not reflect Poole's performance and was about ensuring the council had long-term leadership.

He said yesterday the council was "looking to see what comes out of the recruitment process".

No-one had approached him directly about the job and it was "best if they don't", Brownless said.

Poole confirmed yesterday he would reapply for the job.

The advertisement published in Wednesday's Bay of Plenty Times called for a leader who could manage all council activities while "deftly balancing efficiency and value for money with aspirational service goals for the people of Tauranga".

It contained many management buzz phrases including "strategic leadership", "enhancement of organisational capability", "exceptional commercial acumen", and "collaborative leadership qualities".

Other councils advertising chief executive roles included the Horowhenua District Council and the Masterton District Council.
