Acts of kindness day fills school holidays

Last Thursday's Coast Kids activities weren't traditional holiday programme fare, but that doesn't mean they weren't enjoyable.

Coast Kids runs both holiday and after school programmes, and one day from each holiday programme is given over to a day of practising acts of kindness.

One group was at Tauranga Historic Village in the morning helping out with some of the work being undertaken at Tauranga Envirohub.

A pile of compost, two years in the making, needed putting to good use so, bucket by bucket, it was moved and placed around the trees in the Envirohub's food forest - an area given over to a range of fruit trees.

Later in the day they went shopping - for food to be boxed up and given to families in need.

Other groups helped plant and fertilise dune plants in Papamoa, picked fruit to be passed on to Tauranga Moana Foodbank and helped with gardening for people who have been struggling to manage.

Coast Kids' Cindi Lett says she was pleased with the turnout of children on the act of kindness day.

"We always put aside a day like this for the community and the kids get into it and the leaders get into it. They are learning about things and get out and about and the kids love it," she says.

Coast Kids have centres in Papamoa and Greerton.
