Ngai Te Rangi has reached an agreement with the Crown that could see the iwi getting redress of $29.5 million and the vesting of key sites.
After almost three years of negotiations, Te Runanga o Ngai Te Rangi Iwi Trust and Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson have reached an agreement
in principle, outlining what redress the Crown is offering the iwi after a Treaty of Waitangi breach that saw them lose significant amounts of land.
Ngai Te Rangi negotiator Mita Ririnui said their people had asked the trust to negotiate a deal to help move them into the future.
"We are confident we have achieved that in our talks at the table. All our hapu and marae groups have been supportive of our negotiations."
The redress includes $29.5 million cash, key sites vested in Ngai Te Rangi, including, Maungarangi Pa (Waitao River), Te Rereatukahia (coastal strip at Tetley Rd, Katikati), Karewa Island (opposite Matakana Island) and Motuotau (opposite Omanu beach).
