A three car pile-up on State Highway 29 yesterday saw 10 people taken to Tauranga Hospital, four with serious injuries.
The crash occurred about 12.40pm on SH29, about 100m from the intersection with Gargan Rd, causing major traffic delays as the highway was closed for about two hours.
Tauranga couple Grant and Janice McLean were travelling to Auckland and were among the first on the scene.
Mr McLean said it was chaos, with cars and debris across the road, two young women running around screaming and others trapped and going into shock.
"All of them were very, very lucky to survive," he said.
He was surprised to hear emergency services were yet to be called and said the wait for them to arrive felt like an eternity.
Traffic was backed up from the roundabout at Barkes Corner in Greerton immediately after the crash. When the highway re-opened at 2.30pm speed reduction signs were in place at the crash scene.
Police said a Nissan travelling towards Tauranga crossed the centre line and struck two vehicles travelling in the opposite direction.
Tauranga and Greerton firefighters had to cut free four passengers from two of the three vehicles.
A family of four travelling in a Peugeot was the worst affected. The driver, a 58-year-old Tauranga woman, sustained serious leg injuries. She was trapped in the car for an hour.
A 59-year-old Tauranga male, who was the front seat passenger, received moderate chest injuries.
The two back seat passengers were trapped. An 85-year-old male received chest injuries and an 87-year-old female chest and back injuries. The pair, from Omanawa, were reported to be in a serious condition.
The Nissan also contained a family from Tauranga.
The 40-year-old female driver sustained serious leg injuries and was trapped for 45 minutes. Her 15-year-old front seat passenger received moderate arm injuries.
A 21-year-old female also received a moderate arm injury and a 12-year-old girl was left badly shaken.
In the third car, a Toyota Celica, a 48-year-old Gisborne woman received a minor leg injury while her two-year-old grandson was left shaken.
The 12-year-old and 15-year-old girls and the two-year-old boy have all been treated and discharged. The remaining seven people were this morning in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital.
Three fire appliances, five police cars and three ambulances attended the scene.
Team manager for St John Midland region, Ken Hansen, said St John had to put its major incident procedure into practice as the number of patients put it beyond its normal capabilities.
Working conditions were difficult for emergency services, with heavy rain and an oil spillage on the highway causing workers to watch their step.
Sand had to be scattered over the road later to re-grit it.
Mark Reynolds, who works at Country Fair Fruit Shop on SH29 at Tauriko, said traffic was at a standstill for around 45 minutes, before a number of drivers made the decision to turn around.
Motorists were detoured from Cambridge Rd down Poripori Rd.
After leaving the scene, about two kilometres down the road, Mr McLean and his wife came across a second accident where one of two smashed cars ended up in a paddock. He said four men stood near the car but no one was injured.
