Colouring hair at home is becoming popular again as the cost of living rises and products become more user-friendly. We spoke to the experts about their tips for DIY colouring.
• Keep it natural: Choose a colour just one or two shades away from your natural hair. This will suit your skin
tone and is less damaging. Keep in mind that very dark shades can look harsh on older women. If you're having difficulty deciding between colours, it's best to opt for a lighter shade.
• Check your complexion: If you have ivory- or creamy-coloured skin, you can be as adventurous as you like. But if you have a pale pink-toned or ruby complexion, choose neutrals such as ash blonde, ash brown or dark brown.
• Start with greys: If you are colouring your hair in order to cover grey, apply colour to the greyest area first. This ensures a longer developing time for better coverage.
• Be prepared: Have an old, slightly damp towel on the bench/vanity to place the colouring items on - a damp towel ensures items won't slip around.
• Stop stains: When applying darker shades, apply a thin layer of face cream around the hairline to prevent the skin from staining. Ensure you take extra care not to get cream on the hair, as it may interfere with the colouring process. If you do stain your skin, use a bit of perfume on a tissue to rub it off.
• Watch the clock: Choose a time when you are unlikely to be interrupted; precise timing is essential for an optimum result.
• Wear old clothes: Stains are likely. Also, remove all jewellery and wear the gloves provided to prevent colour staining your hands.
• Save brushing and washing for later: Never brush or shampoo hair immediately before using blonding products or permanent colours, as this can over-stimulate the scalp, causing irritation when the colour is applied.
• Happy endings: When you've finished colouring your hair, it's important to use a shampoo and a conditioner designed specifically for coloured hair. Next week, we'll feature the best products to care for your colour while maintaining the condition of your hair.
