Derby prospect Country Ways looks unbeatable in the opening event, the Wrightson Rural Supplies Pace, at the Invercargill Harness Racing Club meeting at Ascot Park today.
His two wins have been impressive, the first being by 9 1/2 lengths in a novice pace at Ascot Park on December 8. He proved superior against his age when winning the first Southern Supremacy Stakes heat at Gore 19 days later.
Both wins were penalty-free.
"At this stage he feels like a c4-5 horse," Knapdale driver and co-trainer Robin Swain said yesterday.
Country Ways is the south's early tip for the group one New Zealand Derby at Addington on April 14.
"He's potentially the best I've driven," Swain said.
Today's race is a heat of a maiden graduation series, with the $6000 final at Ascot Park next Thursday.
Country Ways was likely to lead in the 2200m mobile event, Swain said. "I'll make use of his speed (to lead) and keep out of trouble. He should win."NZPA
