NEW YORK (AP) U.S. stocks are opening higher with all eyes on retailers, who are hoping for a deluge of customers at the start of the holiday shopping season.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 22 points to 16,119 in early trading Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index gained two points to 1,809. The Nasdaq rose 15 points to 4,060.
More than a dozen major retailers opened on Thanksgiving Day and planned to stay open through Black Friday, the traditional start to the holiday shopping season. Crowds formed early and often throughout the two days
Macy's and Wal-Mart reported a lot of traffic. It's too early to say how much Americans are spending. Major retailers have been cutting their outlooks.
The stock market closes Friday at 1 p.m. Eastern Time (1800 GMT).
