Age prevailed when the Ray White Wanganui Year 6 debuted for the season against an older Year 6/7 Wairarapa X1 on Sunday at Victoria Park.
Playing on Tasman Tanning pitch 4, Wanganui won the toss the and elected to field. The bowlers made early inroads into the Wairarapa batting lineup having them reeling at 23-3, however, some solid middle order partnerships and late hitting allowed Wairarapa to post a handy 165 all out.
Best of the Wanganui bowlers was Connor Rees with 2-10 and Diego Coleman 2-15.
In the chase, Wairarapa openers bowled a very good line and length putting the Wanganui batsmen under extreme pressure early in the innings and had them 25-5. Some small partnerships formed but nothing substantial and eventually Wanganui was out for 71.
Best of the batsmen was promising schoolgirl Charlotte Stent on 18no and Connor Rees 16.
It was a tough start for the talented team against the older Wairarapa team, but a lot of positives can be taken out of the game in the lead-up to the Hawkes Bay tournament in January.
