DETOURS: Motorists using Glasgow St will be redirected along alternatives routes for the next seven weeks as contractors repair stormwater pipes on a section of the street. During the June floods last year some of the pipework under the street, between Bell St and Harrison St, was damaged, causing a sink hole in the road. It doesn't look as if the damage is too extensive in this picture but it was bad enough that it could not be repaired immediately and for the last six months the affected area was cordoned off. Kritzo Venter, senior stormwater engineer for the Whanganui District Council, said inspection of the area showed the damage meant the stormwater pipes would have to dug up to be repaired. "The pipes are 5m under the road and there was no quick fix available," Mr Venter said. The job was put out to tender and the contract awarded to local firm Loaders Wanganui. From next Tuesday detours will be in place between the Bell St and Keith St section of Glasgow St. The work is expected to be completed by March 11.
