ADARK, brooding melodrama set amid the vast hills and towering cliffs of Cornwall was the new series of Poldark on Prime 8.30pm on Wednesday.
The captivating, swarthy and handsome Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) brought into play all the roiling passions that were a little reminiscent of Heathcliff in Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights.
The series is filmed in isolated countryside with emotive seascapes from the cliff peaks, mesmerising sunsets, dusty trails, carpets of wildflowers and huge skies.
It was a superb English backdrop for our dark-skinned gypsy-like hero who has returned home after fighting in the American Revolution. His family and friends thought he was dead.
The beautiful woman he hoped to marry is now engaged to his cousin and, worse, his father has died and the property young Ross has inherited is rotting and derelict.
