A man has been sent to prison after occupants of a Wanganui address awoke in the middle of the night to find him standing at the foot of their bed.
Patrick Domanic Waretini was drunk when he climbed in through the unlocked window on March 5, defence lawyer Debbie Goodlet said.
Waretini knew the occupants of the house, and showed up at 1am knocking on the door. When he received no answer he found the unlocked window and entered the house, the Whanganui District Court heard.
He walked the through the hallway, which was lit at the time.
"The occupants of the house awoke and noticed the defendant standing near the foot of their bed," Judge David Cameron said.
"They yelled at him, telling him to get out of the house."
Waretini exited through the front door. He has pleaded guilty to burglary.
Judge Cameron said Waretini had an "extensive criminal history" and sentenced him to three months in prison.
