A man's body was found in the Whanganui River today.

Whanganui Police spokesperson said a member of the public saw the body about 6.30am, just downstream from Aramoho, and contacted emergency services. The body was recovered shortly after officers attended the scene.

Inquiries are underway to confirm the man's identity and to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

A post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow at Palmerston North Hospital.

Police said no other details were available today.

As a mark of respect, local iwi have placed a rahui on the lower section of the Whanganui River below Mosquito Point. The rahui will be in place from today until 3pm tomorrow [Wednesday].

While the rahui is in force, people are asked to refrain from fishing in the river or use it for recreational activities.
