Some Wanganui cyclists continue to risk their lives 20 years after the introduction of New Zealand's controversial helmet law, according to local police.
In an unscientific test the Chronicle decided to see how many Wanganui cyclists ignored the law. The Chronicle observed 15 cyclists during a 30-minute period; 10 were wearing helmets and five were not.
This experiment was undertaken between 10.30am and 11am on Wednesday, at the Victoria Ave and Ridgway St intersection.
Constable Sumita Rhodes of the Puriri Neighbourhood Policing team said that cyclists going without safety helmets was not a major issue in Wanganui.
"There are a small group of people that cycle and do not wear safety helmets," she said.
