Ostomates are worldwide, and in Wanganui the Ostomy Society will raise its profile and awareness of how people continue with life after becoming an ostomate.
An ostomate is someone who has had a surgical procedure (ostomy) to create an opening in the body that will be used to discharge wastes. The word ostomy means opening.
On Saturday the society will have an information stall in Trafalgar Square.
Wanganui Ostomy Society president Jan O'Neill says the aim of the day, and the group - which has 145 members in the Whanganui region - is to improve the rehabilitation of ostomates by bringing attention to the general and global community, the needs and aspirations of ostomates and their families.
They hold educational programmes, seminars, support meetings, and joint activities with complementary agencies and professional health associates.
