2014: The year of the vegetable

Consult the Chinese calendar and you'll find out that 2014 is the year of the Horse. My prediction though is that it will prove to be the year of the vegetable instead.

We're falling in love with vegetables all over again and the good news is that you don't even have to have your own vege patch to enjoy the spoils because it's the top chefs and eateries who are shining their light on plant-based dishes, making vegetables the hero like never before.

New York City mega-chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's latest restaurant is set to be raw-vegan. This should be proof enough that vegetables replacing proteins as the star of the show is no longer a mere fad or in the realm of "alternative eateries" but a firm reality among the highest echelons of dining.

Watch as even your most avid meat-eating dining companions are seduced by food that is cleaner, greener and, likely as not, pulled straight from the garden at the back of the restaurant kitchen.
