Here's some good news for those who like to travel with man's best friend.

Scenic Hotel Te Pania Napier has rolled out the welcome mat to guests and their dogs, as New Zealand's first full-service dog-friendly hotel.

The hotel's general manager Kerryann Gibbs described the new service as "progressive in delivering a total holiday experience for guests and their fur friends".

The so-called "woofer's welcome" extended by the hotel carries a surcharge of $25 to cover any accidents that may happen in the room.

At this stage, the service must be booked directly thought the hotel and is subject to limited availability.

The waterfront location of Scenic Hotel Te Pania means it's an ideal location for guests to take their dog for a walk down the promenade or one of the nearby dog parks.

"The move gives comfort and peace of mind to those who are reluctant to take a holiday because of having to leave their beloved pets," Ms Gibbs said.

As the hotel had a family focus, she said it was appropriate that furry members of the family be included as well.

Animal friendly hotels around the world

Loews Hotel, Santa Monica, USA

Loews was the first US hotel chain to launch a pet program, with Loews Loves Pets in 2000. Cats and dogs are treated as VIPs (Very Important Pets), with a special pet room service menu, special bedding, treats and dog-walking route maps.

Le Meurice, Paris

While this hotel was being built in 1907, workers adopted a stray dog that had been living on the site. It became the mascot of the hotel and lives on in its emblem. Today, canine guests are treated to a dog basket, a personalised name tag and a special menu. Staff can also arrange for a food bowl to be engraved with a dog's name - a service reserved for the most pampered pups.

The Milestone Hotel, London

On check-in, dogs are greeted with a welcome hamper containing treats, toys, a dog tag, and pooper-scooper bags. The Milestone's dog-friendly rooms include "Do not disturb - pet sleeping" tags and a range of dog duvets, cushions and mats. Plus, if it happens to be your pets birthday, staff can whip up a special cake.

Yufuin Garden Hotel, Oita, Japan

At this hotel, owners and dogs alike can enjoy a relaxing hot spring bath. There's also an exercise paddock and landscaped gardens designed with canine guests in mind, featuring streams and an outdoor shower. Like the Milestone, staff can make your dog a birthday cake on their special day.
