It's time for residents around South Taranaki to look to the future and help the District Council work out what it can do to make their communities better places to live, work and play in.
South Taranaki District Council is seeking residents' views as it reviews Community Development Plans for the Eltham, Kaponga, Hawera, Manaia, Opunake, Patea and Waverley areas.
Plans were developed for each area between 2002 and 2004 in partnership with residents in the seven communities. They include information about the history, infrastructure, economy, environment and cultural life, and set out a vision for the future of each area.
Residents attended workshops which set priorities for projects designed to improve the communities' social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing. These are now up for review, and the council wants residents to comment on the progress that has been made since the plans were finalised. It is also seeking suggestions for new areas residents would support to improve the quality of life in their communities.
Community Development Manager Karen Mekalick said the review was important because most of the seven plans have been in place for three years or longer.
"Many of the most important initiatives have been completed and it is now time for a complete overhaul of the plans," she said. "But before we launch into preparing new plans, council staff need to take a serious look at what has gone well, what could be done better and make sure we know which uncompleted initiatives still have enough community support to carry over."
Ms Mekalick said residents' comments were needed by March 13. Community Development Plans and comment forms are available at LibraryPlus centres around South Taranaki, by phoning the Council on 0800 111 323 or emailing karen.mekalick@stdc.govt.nz
