Injured Blues loose forward Dylan Mika will not see any Super 12 action until next month, but that was an encouraging verdict for the frustrated footballer.
There have been serious concerns about Mika's rugby future after he suffered further lower-back trouble during trial matches for the Super 12. He began having disc problems a couple of years ago and suffered a recurrence last season shortly before the All Blacks went to the World Cup.
He was declared fit to travel and appeared to have overcome the problem until he reinjured himself before and during the practice game last month against the Reds.
After waiting some time for the inflammation to settle down, Mika underwent a scan to sort out the situation.
"He has seen an orthopedic surgeon who had looked at the scans and sees no need for any surgery," team physiotherapist David Abercrombie said yesterday.
"Dylan is getting better and we will manage him day by day and assess where he is. There will not be any rugby for a little while but we are hopeful he could return to jogging in a few weeks. He does not have a back problem anything like the dramas which stopped Olo Brown or Bull Allen from playing."
After an operation to sort out some loose cartilage in his knee, fullback Adrian Cashmore is expected back in three weeks, while Carlos Spencer may play some club rugby before the end of the month.
Prop David Morgan and utility back To'o Vaega are being set for club play this weekend, while hooker Davin Heaps (illness) and wing Joeli Vidiri (calf) both need to pass fitness tests to be picked for round three against the Crusaders.
Captain Robin Brooke is fit at last after his broken hand and subsequent hamstring strain.
