Former All Black Daniel Braid has confirmed his departure from New Zealand to play for the Queensland Reds next year.
The Herald on Sunday reported today that the Reds were trying to lure Braid to Queensland as their marquee player in a deal that would also allow the Auckland flanker to play in Japan or Europe after next year's Super 14.
Braid released a statement today announcing he had signed a two-year option deal with the Reds and will link up with their squad later this year.
"This has been the toughest decision I've had to make in my rugby career," Braid said.
"I've been with Auckland for eight years and the Blues for six and this is my home. However, I also wanted to experience something new in rugby and to me this is the best of both worlds.
"I still get to play in this competition but in a different environment with some fresh new challenges."
The deal came about after the Australian Rugby Union relaxed their eligibility laws last month, allowing Australian Super 14 sides to contract one overseas marquee player.
The Reds were also in desperate need of a quality openside flanker following the retirement of veteran loosie David Croft earlier this year.
New Zealand Rugby Union general manager of professional rugby Neil Sorensen said it was disappointing to lose Braid.
"He is a valued player and we put a lot of work into what we thought was an attractive and flexible package for Daniel but he has opted to head to Australia so we are disappointed to see him go," he said.
Auckland Rugby and Blues CEO Andy Dalton says Braid's leadership, experience will be sorely missed and thanked the flanker for his contribution to Auckland rugby.
"Daniel is an inspirational player and leader both on and off the field. He will be a big loss to us but we understand his reasons for heading offshore and farewell him with sincere best wishes."
Braid, who has played 78 games for Auckland and 59 for the Blues, made his provincial debut in 2001. The following year he was selected for the All Blacks and also gained selection in the 2003 World Cup squad.
Braid was named New Zealand Player of the Year last year and has also played represented New Zealand Maori and the Junior All Blacks and was called into the All Blacks this year, playing against Australia in Sydney.
