Rotorua police have a new tool to help make their presence known on the roads.
The city's road policing team has taken ownership of one of the new red-and-orange police cars being introduced gradually around New Zealand.
The car will be used by the highway patrol.
Rotorua police road policing manager Senior Sergeant Brendon Keenan said the aim was to be visible on the road so motorists were more mindful of their driving behaviour.
"The car stands out so people can see that police are on the roads.
"People are used to the other cars so they almost blend in but this makes people look at it. A lot of our road policing is about presence."
The cars have been rolled out to the country's 12 police districts. There will be a trial involving 28 cars.
A police spokesman said each district would have "a few" and they would be issued to police areas as other cars were removed from service.
The car was used to lead out the Rotorua Marathon on Saturday and people could expect to see it on the main routes around Rotorua this week, Mr Keenan said.
