Rotorua's Tamati Coffey says he gets approached constantly with ideas for new television shows, but he leapt at the chance to tackle an issue close to his heart.

Mr Coffey, co-owner of Ponsonby Rd Lounge Bar, is set to host a new TVNZ1 show Moving Out which is planned to screen mid next year.

The show is being produced by Faultline Films' Amanda Jones who said the show would follow Kiwi families as they chose to move from Auckland's rat race to the provinces.

She said production for the 10 half-hour shows was under way but she was looking for more families to take part.

"The premise is about following people who are choosing quality of life over city life.

"Each week Tamati follows city dwellers who move to provincial New Zealand and as he's done this himself and is really loving his new lifestyle we thought he'd be the perfect host for the show.

"We are actively looking for people who are relocating from Auckland to basically anywhere but Auckland and are hoping to find a really good mix of people - families with young kids, people moving their business, that sort of thing."

She said they had started production with a family who had moved to the Hawke's Bay and would love to feature a family moving to Rotorua.

Mr Coffey said he was looking forward to another foray on television and the fact it was a show about New Zealanders for New Zealanders.

"I'm always being asked to do something new on TV and I turn down most of them, but this situation is close to my heart.

"It's in line with what a lot of people are thinking now, that we need to be spending more in our regions because our regions need more help.

"The exodus from Auckland is very real and it's happening in large numbers."
