Labour's lead as the most preferred political party has slipped in the past month but its junior coalition partner, the Alliance, has doubled its support, shows a One News-Colmar Brunton poll.
The poll, released on Saturday, put Labour's support at 44 per cent, down two percentage points, while the main opposition National Party picked up one point to 40 per cent.
Alliance rose two points to 4 per cent, New Zealand First fell two points to 2 per cent and the environmentalist Greens and Act Party were steady at 5 per cent and 3 per cent, respectively.
The poll of 1000 voters was done after October 30 and had a margin of error of 3.2 per cent.
Prime Minister and Labour leader Helen Clark kept a comfortable lead as the preferred leader, although her support dipped one point to 40 per cent, ahead of National leader Bill English, down two points at 19 per cent.
Approval of the Government's performance hit a four-month high of 55 per cent, up four points, with 29 per cent registering disapproval, down four points.
Most - 63 per cent - backed the military raids on Afghanistan.
Of those, most were males in the high-income bracket and were National Party supporters.
