Two men who escaped from Manawatu prison at Linton on Friday were handcuffed to each other when they entered New Plymouth District Court yesterday.
Phillip William Payne, 25, originally from Taranaki, and Steven James Shortcliffe, 26, from Tauranga, were remanded in custody until tomorrow.
They entered no pleas to charges of escaping, unlawfully taking a car and robbing its owner of $5 in Wellington on Sunday, and using a bank cashflow card with intent to defraud at Wanganui on the same day.
The pair were captured by police as they hitch-hiked near Inglewood on Monday afternoon.
