Sharon O'Neill to be inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame

Much celebrated Kiwi music icon Sharon O'Neill will be inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame.

The 'Maxine' singer-songwriter will be honoured at the 52nd Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards with the Legacy Award, which celebrates the impact a Kiwi artist has had on the New Zealand music scene.

Nelson-born O'Neill is no stranger to music awards, she's the only person to win the Top Female Vocalist at the NZ Music Awards for three consecutive years, in 1978, 1979 and 1980.

O'Neill would first become popular after her performance on the New Zealand TV show "The Entertainers" in 1978.

"I was thrilled to bits just to get where I got, only because it lead to a recording contract for me," O'Neill told Andrew Dickens' Sunday Cafe on Newstalk ZB.

Her debut album "This Heart This Song" picked up awards for Best Producer and Best Engineer, while the album's lead track won the 1979 APRA Silver Scroll.

With her self-titled second album winning Album of the Year in 1980, and in 1983 she also won Best Soundtrack for the 1982 movie Smash Palace.

Recorded Music NZ CEO Damian Vaughan says Sharon O'Neill is iconic to New Zealand music.

"Sharon blazed a trail for women in rock, and it's only right we take the time to celebrate her career and the impact she had on Kiwi music."

O'Neill's contribution to New Zealand music will be acknowledged on November 16.
