Auckland's $18 million pink cycleway is closed again to complete a new layer of sun protection to brighten up its faded appearance.
Just over a year after the cycleway opened, connecting Upper Queen St to Nelson St, its once vibrant magenta pink faded to more of a dirty pastel.
A $115,000 refresh of the cycleway was set down for March, but bad weather prevented the job being completed at the Canada St bridge.
The entire Te Ara I Whiti (Lightpath) cycleway closed on Tuesday for nine days to complete a layer of UV protection that will protect it from the elements and make its colour even more vibrant.
All of the cycleway needs to be closed to ensure the new surface has time to bond properly and because the surface will be very slippery until all the work has been finished.
NZTA acting Auckland highway manager Paul Glucina said closing the path would be frustrating for people using the Lightpath and thanked them for their patience while work is carried out.
The following alternative cycling and walking routes are recommended while the Lightpath is closed.
Southbound - Pitt Street, Mercury Lane, Upper Queen Street
Northbound - Upper Queen Street, Karangahape Road, Pitt Street
For people going to or from the waterfront NZTA suggest you use the Grafton Gully Cycleway.
