Five people have been injured and one person is in serious condition after a car rolled in Northland.

St John ambulance and police are currently at the scene at the intersection State Highway 10 and Kerikeri Rd in Kerikeri.

A St John spokeswoman said one person is in serious condition, one moderate and four have minor injuries.

Police said the car, carrying five people, flipped and was on its roof.

The patients have been transported to Northland Base Hospital.

Police said the road is blocked and are asking motorsists to avoid the area.

Motorists have reported traffic is backed up on Bulls Rd, as a result of the incident.

Steve Meredith, who drove past the crash, said it looked like the car had hit a powerpole before flipping.

"There were ambulances and fire trucks and a stretcher beside the car."

Meredith said traffic was down to a crawl in the area.
