Arrest after alleged East Cape stabbing

A man has been arrested after another man was allegedly stabbed in the remote East Cape.

Police and a rescue helicopter were called to Hicks Bay, on State Highway 35 between Opotiki and Gisborne, this morning.

A 58-year-old man was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital in a stable condition.

Police said a 39-year-old man had been arrested in relation to the alleged stabbing.

They earlier said the alleged offender was believed to be known to the victim.

Police said inquiries into the incident were continuing and no further information was available at this stage.
