Police are calling for witnesses to two attempted assaults on the same woman in Nelson last night.

A woman was walking up the Centre of New Zealand Walkway at about 8pm when two men came up to her and one assaulted her.

After a brief struggle she managed to push the man off her.

But, as she was walking home later that night on Milton St, the same man confronted her and attempted to sexually assault her again.

He ran off and the woman was left shaken, but uninjured.

Police are asking anyone who saw a Middle-Eastern man in his 20s and between 160cm and 170cm tall near Milton St between 8pm and 9pm on Monday night to contact them.

He has dark hair, a beard and was wearing a white T-shirt and dark trousers.

Call Nelson Police on 03 546 3840 or information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
