An early morning hit-and-run has left two people with serious injuries in Wellington.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Adelaide and Cuba St in Petone at about 1.30am today where two cars crashed.

A man from one of the vehicles ditched his car and sprinted away on foot, while the injured occupants of the second car called for help, a police spokesman said.

Two people were transported to Hutt Hospital in a serious condition.

The serious crash unit was called to the scene this morning and police are still searching for the man.

He was believed to be the only occupant of the car.
