A Kiwi has smashed a world shearing record in England today.

Matt Smith, who grew up in Northland, set a new benchmark in the world solo nine-hours ewe shearing with a new tally of 731 ewes.

The previous record of 721 had stood for more than nine years.

Shearing Sports New Zealand Doug Laing said Smith took just 44.32 seconds per sheep or 81an hour to secure the new record.
