A man charged with fleeing police after a pursuit that saw a stolen car crash into a barrier on State Highway One south of Whangarei has been remanded in custody.

Retimana Rurehe, 27, appeared in the Whangarei District Court today charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, reckless driving, failing to remain stopped, failing to stop for police and driving while forbidden. The charges were laid after Rurehe allegedly crashed a stolen Subaru into a barrier on the Oakleigh Bridge on SH1, yesterday afternoon.

Rurehe entered no pleas to the charges and was remanded in custody to reappear in the court on August 2. The car was allegedly stolen from Auckland on Saturday.
