One dead after two-car crash

A man has died in a crash in Selwyn, Canterbury after two cars collided on West Coast Rd in Kirwee shortly after 5pm.

Another person involved has been taken to hospital by helicopter in a serious condition and the jaws of life had to be used to free multiple people trapped in their vehicles after the crash.

Three fire brigades had been called to attend the incident and police were also called to the incident.

Fire services were initially unable to confirm how many people had become trapped and needed medical attention.

The police serious crash unit was attending and the road has been closed.

Diversions will be in place until at least 9:30pm.

Police asked drivers in the area to be patient as there may be delays.
