Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms will dampen some parts of the North Island but the wild weather will leave by the long weekend.

Heavy showers are expected for parts of the North Island, including Auckland and Northland, today.

The temperature in Auckland will reach a maximum of 16C today with possible thunderstorms, Metservice meteorologist Derek Holland said.

However, it will clear by Thursday.

Showers will increase tomorrow with a possibility of thunderstorms.

Temperatures in Hamilton will reach a maximum of 14C today and showers will clear by the afternoon.

Cold southerlies will also be developing today for the central North Island including Taupo and the Bay of Plenty.

But the wet weather should clear by the end of the week for most parts of the country.

Mr Holland said the settled weather was expected to continue for Queen's Birthday weekend.

Maximum temperature for Christchurch and Dunedin today is 9C.
