Police say two people have died in a crash in Canterbury, 5km north of the Conway River.
A car and a truck collided on Hundalee Rd around 1.30 this afternoon.
One person was initially reported dead and another has since died of their injuries.
"It is with sadness that police can confirm that this crash is now a double fatality," police said.
"The male and female occupants of the car involved have died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the truck has not been injured."
Police are currently trying to locate family members of the deceased to inform them of the deaths.
"Our thoughts go out to all the families involved and we thank the people that stopped and assisted at the scene."
The Serious Crash Unit attended the scene, a Christchurch Transport Operations Centre spokesman said.
Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue spokesman Simon Duncan said one of its helicopters attended the accident.
"It was quite a horrific crash," he said. "The female passenger was ejected from the vehicle on impact and was confirmed dead at the scene."
Paramedics from the helicopter attempted to save the man, who had stayed in the car.
"They tried to secure his airways, but unfortunately he passed away."
