The hunt for people reportedly carrying guns in Lower Hutt has been slightly scaled down.

Police, including the Armed Offenders Squad, were called to Harrison Crescent in Lower Hutt earlier this afternoon after reports of "sightings of persons with firearms".

They have cleared the property where the sightings were and say there was no one at the address.

Cordons will remain in place but will be reduced.

A scene examination is being carried out on the street and a vehicle found there is believed to be connected to the incident. The vehicle is stolen.

Inquiries are continuing and police are asking anyone who notices anything suspicious to call 111 immediately.
