Incident in Tauranga leaves woman dead

A woman has died after an incident at Sulphur Point in Tauranga.

Emergency services including police and two ambulances attended the scene just after 4pm today but the woman, who was found floating face down in the water, died at the scene.

Senior Sergeant Mike Membery of Tauranga Police said he understood the woman was alive when she was found. It was not yet confirmed whether her death was a drowning.

"There was a possible medical incident first, but that's speculative [at this point]."

He said the coroner had been informed of the woman's death.
