Homicide investigation launched by Dunedin police

Police have confirmed they are treating the death of Karin Ann Ross - the 51-year-old woman found dead in Dunedin yard this week - as a homicide.

Her body was found at about 2am on Wednesday at a Strathallan Street address.

Police confirmed her identity on and said after a post-mortem and a detailed scene examination, police have upgraded the probe into the "unexplained" death.

Police and specialist staff including forensics will continue working through the weekend and have completed the scene examination at the Strathallan Street address while a number of other scene examinations continue around the Dunedin area.

The Criminal Investigation Branch is said to be following up on positive lines of inquiry.

Police are working closely with the family who are receiving help from victim support services.

A friend of Ross', who asked not to be named, said she was a wonderful person and a dedicated friend.

"She was outgoing, she was friendly, she was a loving mother. She was one of those people you could depend upon. Her integrity was not questionable. I am in mourning."

Police are wanting to speak with any member of the public who was in or around the area of Strathallan Street between midnight and 2am on Wednesday, including shift workers who noticed any activity - and ask them to contact Dunedin Police on 03 471 4800.

Alternatively, information can also be provided anonymously via the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Due to a homicide investigation being launched, police say they are are unable to provide any further details at this time.
