Tracey Kaminski is looking for an angel.

Her angel has a blonde bob, is probably in her 30s and drives a white car.

And in jammed-up traffic on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula at 4pm on Friday, her angel saved the life of Kaminski's 3-year-old son.

"It was the worst thing that's ever happened to me," a tearful Kaminski said yesterday as she told the Herald on Sunday about the dramatic choking incident that nearly claimed her little boy's life.

"Thank God that lovely lady was there. She was my angel."

The Silverdale mum-of-four was driving with her two middle children when she heard 3-year-old Kaleb making "strange noises". Stopping at a red light, she glanced back. Kaleb was choking after his lollipop came off its stick and lodged in his throat.

"He was struggling, his face was going red, his eyes were bulging and he was looking at me like 'help me, help me'. I went into a panic.

"I pulled him out of his seat, hit his back, put my fingers down his throat, tipped him upside down. Nothing was working."

She screamed for help from other motorists and her angel arrived.

The woman, who also had a girl of about 10 in her car, grabbed Kaleb and began forcefully striking his back before performing what Kaminski thought was the Heimlich manoeuvre.

It was a "weird emotion" as a mother to watch someone repeatedly hitting your child and not stop them, Kaminski said.

"I know it was the right thing ... [although] I wanted to take him off her. She was so confident."

As Kaminski grabbed her phone from the car to call for help, the woman managed to dislodge the lolly.

"She screamed 'it's out, it's out'. I grabbed him and started to shake. I hugged her over and over and I hugged him over and over."

The woman offered to sit with Kaminski for a minute but the stunned mum suddenly realised she was holding up traffic and, in shock, instead drove home without getting the woman's name.

Kaleb had a sore throat and was uncharacteristically quiet for a long time, and won't be eating any more lollipops, but was otherwise unharmed.

But his mum is kicking herself for not finding out who their mystery helper was. She made a plea on Facebook yesterday to find the woman and by 4pm it had already been shared more than 1,000 times, including in the United States.

"I want to give her the biggest hug and I want her to know my family would've been destroyed if we'd lost our little man. She's a hero. She saved my little boy's life."
