The Armed Offenders Squad descended on a central Hamilton street after two men were seen with a rifle on a balcony.
Police said they were called to Victoria St about 1.15pm.
The Armed Offenders Squad were called and found a newly purchased air rifle, which they seized.
Police said the two men were pointing it out the door of their apartment and firing it across their shared driveway towards an industrial property.
Police have warned that any form of weapon, whether it be a firearm or an airgun must be used in a safe and controlled environment.
Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend said it is an offence to discharge a weapon.
"If you do buy a weapon like this you must realise that no one else knows whether it is a firearm or an airgun, and both can be very dangerous," said Friend.
"It is not acceptable to be firing airguns in a residential area where it may either endanger or annoy any other person. This incident tied up a large number of Police staff for some time, all because a person was not thinking about what they were doing and how it would be perceived by people driving or walking down the street."
Meanwhile, police were also called to Dome Valley, north of Warkworth after a person said his car was shot at on SH1.
The incident allegedly occurred after the man overtook another car about 2.15pm.
Police said a woman opened the rear window of the car being overtaken, leaned out of the window and pointed a handgun at the man's car.
The car was later found at an address in Warkworth and found a BB gun inside the car.
A woman is assisting police with their enquiries at Warkworth Police Station.
