A 20-year-old man died following a head on collision near Huntly last night.
Police said emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 1, just north of East Mine Rd, about 6.30pm yesterday, after a head on crash occurred between a truck and a car.
Police said a 20-year-old male driver died at the scene of the crash.
The Serious Crash Unit were investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Police said while speed and alcohol did not contribute to the crash, it would be some time before the exact cause was known.
Senior Sergeant Rupert Friend said with the current band of wet weather passing through the Waikato it was critical that all people planning a trip made sure they were fully prepared before they set off.
"Please ensure you have a well rested and sober driver, who is fully qualified or properly overseen, and that the vehicle is fit for the journey, this includes ensuring tyres have good tread and the correct pressure, as well as all lights are working."
"Patience and preparation are keys to the success of journey, especially in poor weather," he said.
