Police have arrested and charged a man with unlawfully taking a bicycle from Auckland University after a wave of alleged campus thefts.
That follows information received from Herald readers after the publication of CCTV footage of two men on bikes on which bolt-cutters were allegedly used to break their chain locks in daylight outside the university's Grafton medical school on Wednesday.
Sergeant Roy Simpson said this afternoon the arrested man was from South Auckland, and would appear in Auckland District Court next week.
Asked whether the police had any leads on the second man, he said "inquiries are ongoing."
He thanked Herald readers for providing information leading to the arrest.
Auckland University last week strengthened a bicycle storage cage on its city campus off Symonds St after several break-ins there and students' association president Paul Smith said then he was concerned about "an almost industrial scale of thefts."
The university's cycling club is pushing for more bike lock-ups around the city campus.
