Stories making headlines around the regions today includes a jilted lover who has set fire to his former partner's home and a perky pooch testing out the theory of 'nine lives'.

You've heard of a cat with nine lives - but a perky Hawke's Bay pooch is testing that theory on canines.

A 53-year-old Masterton man has been jailed for setting fire to a house causing $20,000 worth of damage, and for stealing underwear and super-gluing keys into the doors of his former partner's home.

Former Bay of Plenty residents, Nigel Weekes and his wife Allyson each grabbed a child and ran for cover when the 6.0 magnitude Napa earthquake struck.

It's cupcakes with a cause - hundreds of the tasty treats have been sold to raise money for the Rotorua SPCA.

Brando Yelavich's triumphant completion of his 8000-kilometre trek around the coastline of New Zealand was delayed briefly on Saturday afternoon, while he enjoyed a brief swim directly beneath the Cape Reinga lighthouse.
