A judge has reserved his decision over whether to lift name suppression for two Christchurch women who were the victims of sexual assault nearly 40 years ago.
Their attacker's name has remained suppressed since his sentencing in 1995, for six counts of performing indecent acts on girls aged 10 and 14.
In Christchurch District court today, the victims asked Judge Paul Keller to lift suppression of their names in a bid to get the man's name into the public arena.
Their lawyer Nikki Pender asked the judge to give leverage to the victims democratic rights, by allowing them to tell their story.
Sensible Sentencing Trust's Ruth Money was at court and said it was important to set a precedent now, rather than later.
