Police have located two trampers who were four days overdue from a trip in the Ohau area in the South Island.

This afternoon they said they had located the couple "safe and well in the South Temple Basin".

A relative had reported the duo - a 40-year-old man and 37-year-old woman - overdue yesterday and police found their vehicle in the South Temple car park.

Detective Warren Duncan said a helicopter joined the search today though police had no "immediate concerns for their safety".
