Auckland Council members are considering reopening the door to a waterfront cycling and walking proposal ditched from their long-term budget.
The $10 million plan by Waterfront Auckland to build a 2.5km cycling and walking promenade through Westhaven to the harbour bridge formed part of an "alternative budget" of minority Auckland
Communities and Residents (C&R) and independent councillors.
Although the council-controlled waterfront agency initially thought it was approved at a crucial budget meeting a fortnight ago, and told cycling groups so, it acknowledged last week it was mistaken and the project had in fact been blocked as part of the alternative package.
That left Auckland Mayor Len Brown in the awkward position of defending his failure to support new cycling and walking infrastructure which C&R leader Christine Fletcher said was ranked top among various waterfront projects put up for public consultation last year.
But although the council's 10-year budget has now been approved for implementation on July 1, its future vision "committee of the whole" voted on Tuesday to put the promenade proposal back on the table if possible.
