A woman was seriously hurt when two yachts collided on Auckland's waterfront this afternoon, sinking one and throwing two people into the water.

Sergeant Craig Kennedy of the Auckland police maritime unit said the sailboats collided near Princes Wharf.

The Coastguard said it received a distress call shortly after noon.

Volunteers aboard the Coastguard vessel ASB Rescue were quickly on the scene.

The two people thrown into the water were rescued and a woman was taken to a waiting ambulance.

She was taken to Auckland Hospital in a serious condition.

Maritime New Zealand said it had been alerted to the incident and was making preliminary inquiries.

The collision comes on Auckland Anniversary Day, one of the most popular days of the year for yachties to head out on the water.
