Sharples makes unexpected appearance at Harawira hui

Maori Party co-leader Dr Pita Sharples is in the Far North at a hui for embattled MP Hone Harawira.

Dr Sharples was joined by other Maori Party MPs Te Ururoa Flavell and Rahui Katene as well as party president Whatarangi Winiata and co-vice-president Heta Hingston at Te Kura Kaupapa O Rangi Aniwaniwa on the outskirts of Kaitaia.

Dr Sharples' presence is a surprising one given that neither he or Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia said they would attend the hui.

Dr Sharples' presence is a sign of solidarity.

Mainstream media have so far been barred from entering the meeting which about 200 people have turned out for. TVNZ's Te Karere and Maori TV's Te Kaea have been granted entry.

The Maori Party will today decide on any disciplinary action against Mr Harawira for his jaunt to Paris and his expletive-ridden email that was made public.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters earlier used a speech to Grey Power in Wanganui to attack Mr Harawira for his abusive comments.

"When an MP can vilify other New Zealanders on an overtly racial basis - and not be instantly dismissed from his party - we are in deeply dangerous territory."

The Maori Party as a whole was culpable because it failed to sack Mr Harawira, he said.
