KEY POINTS:
More details have emerged about the start of a police chase that ended in Friday's fatal shooting of Auckland courier driver Halatau Naitoko.
The 17-year-old bystander was shot and killed after police opened fire on alleged gunman Stephen Hohepa McDonald, 50, on the Northwestern Motorway.
Now a second person - Margaret Patricia Iris Mann, 19 - has appeared in court for her part in the events preceding Friday's car chase.
Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty told the Herald last night that officers were at a West Auckland home making "completely unrelated" inquiries when a car pulled up at the address about 1pm on Friday.
Ms Hegarty would not say what street the officers were in or what they were at the address for, but said they were not far from Glendale Rd - where McDonald allegedly stole another car and the chase began.
Police say Mann was driving McDonald in a blue Toyota Corsa stolen from Mayoral Drive on January 6 when they arrived at the home police were already visiting.
"[Police] suspicions were first raised when they drove off at speed once they discovered police officers in the driveway of the address that they had gone to," Ms Hegarty said.
"[Mann] was allegedly driving ... It was ... [then] that a firearm was first presented at police - allegedly by the passenger, McDonald."
The relationship between Mann and McDonald is not yet clear.
But while police were arresting Mann, McDonald fled - allegedly with a sawn-off .22 Ruger rifle - before allegedly stealing a green Toyota Hilux from Glendale Rd. He later replaced that with a grey Nissan Skyline he drove across Auckland and to the motorway shooting scene.
Police are still seeking a city-bound motorist believed to have passed the truck on the motorway moments before Mr Naitoko was shot.
Mann faces charges of unlawfully getting into a stolen car, failing to stop for police and driving while forbidden.
She has been remanded in custody and will next appear in the Waitakere District Court next Wednesday.
McDonald faces 29 charges.
