Lotto player scoops $8m
An Auckland Lotto player has scooped an $8 million prize from Saturday's draw. The prize is made up of $7 million from Powerball first division and $1 million from Lotto first division.
The winning ticket was sold at Botany New World. The winning numbers from Saturday's draw were 2, 13, 19, 25, 35 and 36. The bonus was 6 and the Powerball number was 5.
Homeless issue to be debated
Whangarei's leading developers, providers and innovators are gathering to discuss homelessness in New Zealand. Yale University has just released a study that shows New Zealand has the highest rate of homelessness in the developed world.
Speakers for the event include Te Uku Developments Papakainga's Aroha Shelford, Tai Tokerau Emergency Housing Trust's Adrian Whale, Johnstone Group's Freya Johnstone, Te Matapihi's Jade Kake, Homeworld's Barry Trass and Green Party spokesperson for social housing, Marama Davidson. The Family Talks event will be held at The Old Stone Butter Factory at 7pm, Thursday. Entry is by a koha.
Blaze damages kitchen
The kitchen of an Onerahi home has been damaged after a pot left on the stove caught fire. Whangarei and Onerahi fire brigades were called to Chester Ave in Onerahi shortly before 6am yesterday.
Onerahi Volunteer Fire Brigade's Brian Redwood said the fire got into the ceiling but was contained to the kitchen. He said fire crews got to the scene reasonably quickly and while there was some damage, it could have been a lot worse. One person was at the property at the time and managed to get out and raise the alarm.
Police pull over stolen car
A stolen vehicle has been recovered after police received reports it was heading in to Whangarei from Oakura. Police said they received the call about the car at 9.25am on Friday.
Police units were sent to the area and by 9.44am police were following the vehicle on Vinegar Hill Rd. When police signalled for the vehicle to pull over, it stopped.
One man was arrested and the car was towed away for forensic examination.
