A commercial vehicle was completely gutted in a fire which started while the van was being driven.
A fire appliance was called to Tip Rd in Waipu about 11am on Saturday but the fire had completely engulfed the vehicle by the time firefighters arrived.
Waipu fire chief Trevor Vaile said the blaze started from under the front passenger's seat, forcing the driver and his passenger to pull over and exit the vehicle before calling 111.
He said the four-wheel drive Toyota Hiace was a write off, but parts such as the gear box could possibly be recovered and used. Both male occupants escaped unhurt.
